BMW Motorbike Restoration phase 2
The BMW R 90 S is completely disassembled, all parts are cleaned and sorted. The assemblies are sent to the individual specialist departments in our company and the inspection can begin. Bearings, sealing rings, screws and various small parts are left out, as these are always replaced during such a complete restoration.
The frame and all chassis parts are sandblasted and checked for damage or improper repairs. Depending on the damage, the parts may have to be reworked and then powder-coated. The rims are disassembled, the rim rings polished and the hubs blasted.
The blasting work and its correct execution are an important point. Parts that will later be coated or painted can be blasted with sand or glass beads. However, this is fatal for parts that will later be mounted open and untreated on the vehicle. Glass bead blasting or sandblasting leaves an open porous surface. When freshly done, it looks good, but when the vehicle is driven later on, the dirt settles in the pores. This dirt is difficult to clean and the parts quickly look unsightly again. This problem is exacerbated by the use of the widespread and inexpensive injector blasting systems. We use a professional pressure blasting system and ceramic balls as blasting media. With this method, the surfaces are compressed and closed. Ergo, it looks permanently super and can be easily cleaned again at any time.
The paint parts are checked to see whether everything can be reused or whether individual parts need to be replaced. When purchasing the vehicle, we make sure that these parts are original and as undamaged as possible. The tank is chemically cleaned from the inside, derusted and recoated. Then these parts go to the paint shop.
The seat goes to our in-house saddlery. As a rule, the core has to be rebuilt, the cover is reupholstered with original leather if possible.
The entire electrical system is usually sorted out. The cable lugs become brittle and fragile over the years, so the risk of possible failure is simply too great if they are to be reused.
The engine, gearbox and final drive go to our in-house engine department. We specialise in older motorbike engines and their repair. The classic work such as cylinder drilling and honing, cylinder heads overhaul or revision, unleaded conversions etc. are part of our core business. Everything is checked, but as with the chassis, certain parts are always replaced. All bearings, oil seals, gaskets, timing chains, valves, seat rings, valve guides, pistons, etc. are always replaced.
Once everything has been disassembled and checked, the parts lists are sent to our BMW 2-valve specialists. They then take care of procuring and assembling the individual parts packages.
